  • Pumpkin Choice: While any pumpkin will work, a sugar pumpkin (also known as pie pumpkin) will give you the best flavor and texture.
  • Meatball Consistency: Don’t overmix the pork mixture, or the meatballs will be tough. Gently combine the ingredients until just combined.
  • Adjust Seasoning: Taste the soup as it cooks and adjust the fish sauce, sugar, and black pepper to your liking.
  • Garnish Generously: A sprinkle of fresh green onion adds a pop of color and freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use ground chicken or turkey instead of pork?
A: Yes, you can! Just be aware that the flavor will be slightly different. Chicken or turkey meatballs will be lighter in flavor.

Q: Is fish sauce essential?
A: While you can omit it, fish sauce is a key ingredient in Cambodian cuisine and adds a unique umami flavor that’s hard to replicate. If you’re avoiding fish sauce, you could try a splash of soy sauce, but it won’t be quite the same.

Q: Can I make this soup ahead of time?
A: Yes, this soup actually tastes even better the next day! Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Q: What side dishes pair well with this soup?
