What makes this chowder special?

  • Three Types of Salmon: The blend of dried, smoked, and fresh salmon creates a complex and delicious flavour profile.
  • Creamy & Comforting: The perfect balance of cream and broth creates a velvety smooth texture.
  • Easy to Customize: Add your favourite vegetables or adjust the seasonings to suit your taste.
  • Canadian Inspired: A true taste of Canadian cuisine.

Tips for the Best Salmon Chowder:

  • Don’t Overcook the Salmon: Overcooked salmon will be dry and rubbery. Add the fresh salmon towards the end of the cooking process.
  • Use Good Quality Salmon: The flavour of the salmon is crucial to the success of this chowder.
  • Adjust the Thickness: Add more or less cornstarch to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Garnish Generously: The garnishes add flavour, texture, and visual appeal.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve this hearty chowder with a side of crusty bread, fresh bannock, or dinner buns for a complete and satisfying meal. A simple green salad also makes a lovely accompaniment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can I use frozen potatoes instead of diced potatoes?
A: Absolutely! A bag of frozen hash browns works perfectly and saves you some prep time.

Q: Can I substitute the heavy cream with milk?
A: While you can use milk, the chowder won’t be as creamy or rich. Half-and-half is a good alternative.

Q: Can I make this chowder ahead of time?
A: Yes, you can make it a day ahead and reheat it gently. The flavours will meld together even more!

Q: What kind of dill should I use?
A: Fresh dill is best, but dried dill can be used in a pinch. Use about 1 teaspoon of dried dill in place of 1 tablespoon of fresh dill.

Q: Is this recipe gluten-free?
A: This recipe is naturally gluten-free, but always double-check the ingredients to ensure they are certified gluten-free if you have a severe allergy.

We hope you enjoy this Family Favourite Salmon Chowder as much as we do! It’s a recipe that’s sure to become a cherished part of your family’s culinary traditions.
