Looking for a flavorful and satisfying soup that’s packed with veggies and a little kick? Our Spicy Chicken Cabbage Soup is just what you need! This isn’t your grandma’s cabbage soup – we’ve taken a classic and given it an Asian-inspired twist with lemongrass, fish sauce, and a generous pinch of sriracha. It’s a perfect weeknight meal that’s relatively quick to prepare and incredibly comforting.

This recipe is a delightful blend of textures and tastes. The tender chicken, shredded cabbage, and vibrant carrots and zucchini create a hearty base, while the lemongrass and spices add layers of aromatic complexity. The sriracha and red pepper flakes provide a pleasant heat that will warm you from the inside out.

We’ve made a few adjustments to an original recipe to make it even more accessible and delicious. We swapped out some harder-to-find ingredients for readily available alternatives, and added a zucchini for extra chunkiness and nutrition. The result is a soup that’s both authentic in flavor and easy to make.

A: While green cabbage is traditional, you can experiment with Napa cabbage or Savoy cabbage for a slightly different texture and flavor.

Q: Can I make this soup vegetarian or vegan?
A: Absolutely! Simply substitute the chicken with tofu or mushrooms, and use vegetable broth instead of water. Be sure to use a vegan fish sauce alternative or omit it altogether.

A: Yes, this soup freezes well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

  • 10 cups water
  • 2 large chicken breasts
  • 1 medium to large head of green cabbage shredded
  • 2.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp lemongrass paste
  • 2 grated carrots
  • 1 medium zucchini cut into strips
  • 4 green onions
  • 2 tsp fish sauce
  • 3-4 tsp soy sauce
  • 3 tsp sriracha sauce
  • 0.5 tsp red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • This recipe came from Hungry Foodies, but I had to make some changes. There were a lot of ingredients I substituted either because I already had some variation of it in my kitchen or because I couldn't find in my regular grocery store (and I didn't feel like running all over town looking for them). I also added a zucchini for a little extra chunky. You can see the differences and get the recipe instructions by going to their website.
